Help Stop Speeding with the Pace Car Program
Active & Safe Routes to School partnered with Canada’s home, car and business insurers and the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal to bring this grassroots, anti-speeding initiative to Nova Scotia. The Pace Car program helps stop speeding on neighbourhood streets. It’s simple – drivers in your community sign the Pace Car pledge, and then proudly display the official Pace Car emblems on their cars. By agreeing to drive within the speed limit, cars become “mobile speed bumps,” slowing the traffic behind them. Drivers also agree to be more aware of and courteous to other road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists. Many Pace Cars can effectively calm traffic throughout your neighbourhood. The more people who join, the better it works!
The Pace Car program was invented by David Engwicht of Creative Communities International, Queensland, Australia.
Create Pace Car Community Teams
Community groups and/or schools are invited to become Pace Car Community Teams to promote the Pace Car in specific neighbourhoods. See the Pace Car Community Kit below to learn how to form a team and get the Pace Car program running in your neighbourhood.

Contact us and we’ll put you in touch with your community team. If your community isn’t listed, become a Pace Car champion and create your own Pace Car Community Team.

Pace Car Deputies
Pace Car Deputies is an aspect of the Pace Car program, meant to be offered in conjunction with the larger Pace Car program in a community. Pace Car Deputies is for elementary school-aged children. It is a leadership opportunity helping children address the issue of speeding and road safety in their community. In cooperation with Active & Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) and the local Community Pace Car team, children learn about the hazards of speeding and how they can help stop speeding even though they don’t drive. Each child takes a pledge to become a Pace Car Deputy and receives an official Pace Car Deputy badge/button and pledge card.
